The Edson facility is located in central Alberta. Edson has a population of 8,646 (2012 Municipal Census) and has a full range of recreational and cultural facilities. Edson is strategically located on Highway 16, the Trans Canada Yellowhead Route approximately 180 kilometers west of Edmonton and only a short hour drive to world famous Jasper National Park. This position is part of the Mill Leadership Team at the Edson oriented strand board mill and reports to the Plant Manager. The Technical Director provides technical expertise to support the mill from a product quality standpoint.

Key Functions

Lead, Promote and demonstrate a strong focus and personal commitment to safety at all times. This position is responsible for managing the onsite lab staff and procedures; optimizing and maintaining recipes for OSB products; submitting SR&ED claims; maintaining the Quality Management System; ensuring instrumentation is calibrated and verified for product and process key variables; problem solving on a continual basis; maintaining relationships with 3rd parties; working in conjunction with corporate technical staff and keeping up-to-date with current technical trends. Responsible for continuous improvement in safety, housekeeping, waste reduction, quality, productivity, customer satisfaction and cost. Actively involved in the development of his/her employees through training, coaching and regular performance evaluations and feedback.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree is required. Preferred degree in a relevant field of science or engineering. Other degrees and education combined with directly related experience will be considered. Masters degree will also receive preference.
  • Minimum three (3) to Five (5) years technical experience with knowledge of OSB manufacturing processes which is strongly desired.
  • Must have track record of consistently demonstrating leadership skills as well as positive influence and accomplishments in safety, quality, productivity, change management, and people development.
  • Demonstrated success in working with customers, direct reports, peers, other department employees including managers.
  • Team oriented and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be pro-active in process improvements and have excellent follow-through in meeting commitments.
  • Strong Computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and experience with industrial statistics and statistical analysis
  • Capable of managing multiple projects with strong organizational skills with very close attention to detail. Must be able to prioritize and multitask with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Critical thinker, enthusiastic and positive approach towards employees and work
  • Ability to meet timelines and deal tactfully and courteously with business stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupation hazards and corresponding safety precautions necessary for the safe performance of assigned duties.
