Role

This professional level forest health officer position works in a collaborative team environment in order to deliver a diverse forest health program in the Lower Peace Region. As the successful candidate you will conduct surveys to identify and evaluate the impact of forest health damaging agents (e.g. insects, diseases, invasive plants) on forest stands and develop and execute suitable action plans for control. You will be responsible for providing extension services to the public, municipalities and industries, aid with development and implementation of cooperative projects with industries and other government agencies; and, perform other duties associated with implementation of forest health projects (e.g. project management, contract management, hiring and supervising field crews, project budgeting and expenditure monitoring).

You will operate with a high degree of independence while working towards the development and maintenance of a long-term forest health program. You will also be responsible for addressing emerging and priority issues related to impacts of forest pests and disease, including mountain pine beetle management. Your solid leadership, supervision, interpersonal, communications, problem-solving and negotiating skills will serve you well in dealing with other professionals, stakeholders, industry, contractors and the public.

ABOUT YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT:

As the successful candidate, you will be operating out of the Peace River office. Significant portions of your time will be spent conducting field work in the area, including significant time participating in aerial surveys. Travel within the Peace Region and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities. You will have frequent contact with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and external stakeholders province-wide.

Qualifications

A degree in Natural Resource Management (e.g. Forestry, Environmental Sciences or Biology) plus four years’ directly related experience is required. Equivalencies will be considered. Eligibility for membership with the College of Alberta Professional Foresters, Alberta Society of Professional Biologists, or equivalent, is required. Experience working with applicable legislation including the Forests Act, Public Lands Act and Weed Control Act and extensive knowledge of major damaging forest agents and appropriate control methods would be considered an asset. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification level and salary.

Salary

$2,722.90 to $3,516.82 bi-weekly ($71,068 to $91,789 per annum)
