Role

Since 1965, the Junior Forest Ranger (JFR) program has been proud to offer summer work experiences to youth across Alberta by providing participants an opportunity to explore career paths in forestry, natural resource management and earth sciences. If you would like play a lead role in this program then we may have the opportunity for you as our JFR Specialist Reporting to the JFR/Review and Improvement Unit Supervisor, you will be tasked with providing comprehensive services essential to the planning, delivery and ongoing enhancement of the provincial JFR program. This will include recruiting and hiring members, planning and coordinating the delivery of crew leader and crew member training, and working closely with designated Area and community coordinators to ensure consistency in program objectives and delivery. Not only will you be responsible for recruiting, hiring and training JFR program crew leaders, members and support positions, you will also be the key resource for Area and community coordinators responsible for the day-to-day operational delivery of the program and supervision of JFR program participants. In addition to continually developing and implementing improvements to the JFR program, you will provide advice and support for other programs and act as a key member of the JFR/Review and Improvement Unit, contributing significantly to unit programs and activities. Please note that as JFR crews are located across the province in various established locations and host communities this position requires travel and could require weekend work during the summer operational season of the JFR program.

Qualifications

A related degree, 2 years of related experience and a valid Class 5 driver’s license is required. Equivalencies such as additional related experience in lieu of education will be considered. Previous experience in the JFR or another youth program and/or experience in a natural resource management environment will be considered an asset.

Additionally, high levels of professional judgment and initiative are critical to continually adapt the program in response to changing demographics, Ministry priorities, and resource management sector outlook.

As the JFR Specialist, you will provide leadership and guidance to Area and community coordinators responsible for JFR program delivery during the operational season.

Build Collaborative Environments- This position establishes contacts with non-government organizations, Aboriginal communities, industry, municipalities, and agencies to foster participation in the JFR program and collaborate on partnerships and initiatives. Additionally, crews participate in wildfire prevention and urban-interface activities, recreational development projects, research initiatives, and other diverse initiatives, and you will be collaborating and serving as the key liaison with internal and external partners to initiate, plan and execute the projects and initiatives.

Develop Networks-This position initiates and maintains relationships with partners and stakeholders that are essential to the ongoing operation and evolution of the JFR program. For example, contacts will include area and community coordinators, peers in other jurisdictions, other areas of the division and Ministry and representatives of other departments and governments, industry, non-government organizations, agencies, academic institutions, First Nations and Metis Settlements, and Aboriginal organizations.

Salary

$2,588.03 to $3,394.66 bi-weekly ($67,548 to $88,601 annually)
