FORESTRY SUMMER & TERM POSITIONS

West Fraser hires 55 forestry summer students each year to work at one of our 10 woodlands divisions across BC and Alberta. Under the supervision of forest professionals, the selected candidate will get hands-on experience in a 4-8 month work term. There is significant potential for long term advancement within the company, starting with full-time job opportunities post graduation.

BC locations: Fraser Lake, Quesnel, 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Smithers, or Chetwynd

Alberta locations: Sundre, Slave Lake, Hinton, or Whitecourt/Blue Ridge

SILVICULTURE:

Primary duties may include the supervision of tree planting contractors to ensure compliance with quality, environmental and safety standards, regeneration and free growing surveys, stand tending assessments and layout and other silviculture related duties.

OPERATIONS:

Duties may include the supervision of  harvesting and road building contractors to ensure quality, environmental and safety standards are being met,  site assessments and inspections and other duties related to operations.

PLANNING:

Main duties may include road and cutblock development, site level plans and ecosystem data collection, assessments including stream and riparian assessments and other planning related duties.

Qualification and experience requirements:

  • Must have a valid drivers license, strong work ethic, and love working outdoors!
  • Enrolled in a Forestry related post-secondary degree or diploma program such as Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences and/or Conservation
  • Prior forestry, agricultural and/or industrial experience is considered an asset
  • Must be available to commence work in May 2017

This position is based out of Hinton, Alberta, 20 minutes east of Jasper National Park and 2.5 hours west of Edmonton, Alberta. Set amidst the stunning scenery of the Alberta Rockies, West Fraser operates both a sawmill and a pulp mill in Hinton and has been proudly practicing sustainable forest management for 60 years on its local forest tenure.
