The Edson facility is located in central Alberta. Edson has a population of 8,646 (2012 Municipal Census) and has a full range of recreational and cultural facilities. This salaried non-exempt position is part of the Technical Team at the Edson oriented strand board mill and reports to the Technical and Environmental Manager. The Process Control Technician provides expertise and support in operating and controlling production process, control and laboratory functions of the Mill position and has been used as an entry level for other supervisory roles within the mill for candidates who possess superior leadership qualities.

Key Functions:

The successful candidate must have the ability to become proficient in a timely manner with all aspects of the Process Control Technician’s duties. External application referred by our employees will also be accepted.

  • The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership by demonstrating a commitment to safety by identifying safety opportunities, participating in safety audits and completing hazard assessments.
  • The candidate will perform quality activities in accordance with the Technical department operating procedures, including routine structural testing as prescribed by the mill’s Quality Management System.
  • The candidate will monitor and complete testing on all aspects of the mill process in order to ensure the manufacturing of consistent high quality product.
  • In addition the successful candidate will understand process flow and operate the control room.
  • Taking the skills of the quality role the candidate will develop into a trained control room operator.
  • As an operator process flow knowledge, mechanical aptitude and strong communications skills are required.
  • Performs quality activities in accordance with the Technical SOP’s including routine structural testing as prescribed by the mill Quality Management System.
  • Promotes the use of Process Reliability concepts throughout the mill.
  • Ensures the accuracy of records and appropriate documentation with respect to quality and production.

This person must become familiar with concepts of Statistical Process Control and be able to interpret quality and process data. After becoming proficient in the above routine duties this person will look for improvement opportunities and conduct Designed Experiments throughout the process.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Manufacturing Process.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Good interpersonal leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Technical education/training desired.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and has good leadership skills.
  • Must be able to think logically and critically with good analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods is an asset.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills, sound interpersonal relationship building skills as well as computer skills.
  • Must possess the ability to share knowledge with others, promote team environment and be a team player.
  • A post-secondary degree in Wood Technology, Civil Engineering, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education/experience would be an asset.
  • Motivation, a desire to learn, and basic computer skills are also to be considered.
  • Able to adjust quickly to changing conditions and multiple priorities.
  • Organized with continuous improvement orientation. Able to train less skilled employees.

This position works a 12 hour, 4 on 4 off day and night rotating shift.
