Feel free to listen to this song and possibly watch the video while reading this blog. The organ player wants to rock out so hard, but he’s tied down to his instrument. I bet he wishes he had a key-tar.
I had only been to High Level once before yesterday, and I can’t say I had an overly glowing memory of the place, but that’s all changed now. This place is actually pretty sweet, at least in the summer. They have a Quizno’s, Boston Pizza, a fancy new looking hospital and even a fake mini Las Vegas Strip that includes a Mirage, Flamingo and Sands. See below how wicked High Level looks at night… … … (may or may not actually be High Level)
Anyways, the point I’m dancing around is High Level is not as bad as people have it cracked up to be. Did you know in June it’s almost light for 24 hours here? How sweet would that be? I bet the farming up here is also pretty good with all the moisture and sunlight in the summer (despite the short growing season). You can start golfing at midnight and still get 36 holes in before work. There’s ball tournaments that go all night. There’s even an airport here, so if you want to get out of town when you have time off you can. I even got a picture of one of the planes flying in today.
I could tell just by being in the classroom today that the community is very tight knit and the students I spoke to today will go onto great things, whether that’s rodeo-ing, operating a feller buncher, becoming a forester, professional mud-bogger, doctor or a lawyer. Even though a lot of them wanted to leave town, I think that growing up in a place like High Level will help them in their futures. I know they didn’t have the opportunity to go watch a movie every weekend, or go swimming every day, or even eat MacDonalds frequently, but I think they’ll all be better for it.
Shout out to Ms. Robinson who’s classroom I took over this morning and who is an Easterner spending her first year in High Level. She had to talk about sex and relationships in her CALM class after I left, and she wrote a quote on the board “Lust is easy, love is hard, like is the most important”. I think teaching about forestry is probably way easier than what she’s doing. Here’s a Mrs. Robinson inspired commerical. For the couple of minutes I talked to her, I think she is the type of person who would do/appreciate this (and Mrs. Robinson is playing in the background).
