Although I occasionally miss being outside, working with my hands and being in the trees, the job I have right now is awesome. My official title is “Forest Industry Liaison”. That title was chosen for me, and it kind of makes sense, but it’s basically my job to take forest industry info, and spread it to the public. Things started out harrier than David Hasselhoff’s chest.
A COMMUNICATOR
The day of the Work Wild launch I was to send out an email to all of our industry members talking about what we were doing. Easy for someone who’s job it is to communicate, right? I wrote a beautiful, rah rah email that talked about me going to high schools, post-secondary schools, operating this website/facebook page, and advertising. This advertising included “wrapping public bathrooms” with trees to make it look like you were in a forest. Unfortunately, on day 1 of the launch, I told everybody we were advertising in “PUBIC” bathrooms. Good job communicator Cam. You’re a such great communicator.
YOU’RE FIRED!!!
No I wasn’t fired. Although the only reason I was hired was to effectively communicate messages, and a I screwed it up, I didn’t get fired. One of the reasons are the people that work in the forest industry. The people are awesome and were able to just brush off the fact that I made a mistake (even if it was my only purpose of employment). Some places you’ve worked I’m sure it’s felt like everyone was always trying to get ahead and one up each other. None of the jobs I’ve had in the forest industry have been like that at all. Every office has been awesome. Every office goes out and has drinks after work on a Friday. Every group of people worked as teams, not as individuals trying to succeed. Does everyone experience this? I don’t know, but the people I get to work with every day make it easy for me to have fun. I especially enjoy our fiinancial controller who reads these blogs and has the power to pay me more money just by changing a few numbers in a spreadsheet…
Other Sweet Parts of my Job
There’s a bunch of other cool things about my job in the forest industry.
1) I got to spend yesterday afternoon making a movie.
2) I have a giant truck to drive around (as do many people who work in this industry).
3) I get to spend lots of time spreading a positive message that I enjoy talking about.
4) I get to drive a lot an listen to a lot of sweet music like the song below that I’ve been pumping frequently of late. I also get to see every corner of the province. Every corner is different and awesome in different ways.
5) I expense lots of stuff which leads to Visa points that can fly me places.
6) I can help spread the message about stewardship to young people. Hopefully they can take up the flag and manage the forest sustainably like the forest industry has been doing for so long.
7) I get to hang out with a giant squirrel mascot. Well I got to. Last week. The Work Wild squirrel was awesome and could probably take down a dinosaur…
