Planer Mill Maintenance Supervisor (Whitecourt Sawmill)

Millar Western is looking to hire an experienced Planer Mill Maintenance Supervisor to work at its lumber manufacturing operations in Whitecourt, Alberta.  Reporting to the Finishing Superintendent, this individual will lead the planer-mill maintenance team in all areas of safety, quality control and continuous improvement.  He or she will:

  • lead by demonstration on floor, ensuring accountability regarding safety policies and procedures, identify and communicate hazards, and work with team members to prioritize, plan and schedule completion of all safety-related items;
  • work directly with Finishing Superintendent and Quality Control to monitor product quality and ensure best practices through the exploration and immediate address of cause and effects of manufacturing defects from planer and sawmill, support and organize maintenance activities with the kilns;
  • effectively communicate throughout the planer operation and leadership group, as well as upstream and downstream customers, regarding PM, project schedules, and safety and quality concerns;
  • and, create and maintain a culture of continuous improvement through collaborative issue identification, goal setting, trouble-shooting, process completion and evaluation.

The ideal candidate

Qualified candidates will possess strong mechanical aptitude, trouble-shooting experience and knowledge of planer operation, set up and alignment.  The successful candidate will have strong communication and cost-management skills, as well as experience with SAP or similar maintenance systems. A Millwright Journeyman certificate, previous experience in a sawmill-planer mill environment and/or 3 to 5 years in a leadership role will be considered assets.
