Opportunity Description

Based out of our office in Sherwood Park, Alberta the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as a Professional Forest Practitioner. Primary responsibilities will be working with Alberta communities to improve their protection from wildfire effects through the FireSmart program approach. A secondary role will be assisting the CPP Environmental team in conducting environmental assessments and providing support to regulatory applications.

Responsibilities include:

 Community FireSmart planning

o Wildfire risk and threat assessments

o Wildfire mitigation strategies

o Preparedness guides

 Fuel modification prescriptions

o Pre-treatment assessments o Installation and measurement of fuel assessment plots

o Forest fuel and weather data analysis

o Development of fuel modification prescriptions

o Post treatment assessments and reporting

 Municipal FireSmart program development, review and evaluation for municipalities

 Public education events for FireSmart

 Residential FireSmart assessments

 FireSmart project supervision

 Landscape wildfire threat analysis

 Review and development of Bylaws for Municipalities

Minimum Qualifications

 Possess a BSc in Forestry or a diploma in Forest Technology.

 Be a member in good standing with either the College of Alberta Professional Foresters or the College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists (which are merging to form the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals).

 Five years’ work experience in wildfire suppression, wildfire prevention, FireSmart planning or forest management planning.

 A valid driver’s license.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to use their diverse background of skills and experience to successfully work with other CPP Environmental team members in developing and delivering high quality services and products to our clients.

Attributes of the ideal candidate:

 Proven knowledge of FireSmart planning, forest management and land management.

 Working knowledge of the Canadian Forest Fire Behavior (FBP) Prediction System.

 Working knowledge of wildfire suppression techniques, tactics and equipment.

 Strong client relation skills.

 A willingness to take responsibility for their deliverables.

 Ability to work with confidence either independently or in a team setting.

 Ability to work on multiple projects, set priorities, and meet rigid deadlines.

 Professional, safety conscious, and client focused attitude.

 Knowledge of and use of GIS tools and basic mapping.

 Knowledge and use of field data loggers, GPS equipment, etc.
