If you are looking to take the next step in your wildfire career or are looking to further develop your experience in wildfire operations, we may have the role for you! We are currently looking for a highly motivated individual to take on the role of a Wildfire Operations Officer for our Peace River office.

As the Wildfire Operations Officer, you will not only act as a member of the Wildfire Operations group but will also be responsible for providing leadership to the Operations section in Peace River. Your key focus will be on leading and delivering wildfire pre-suppression and suppression operations, and contributing to the development and implementation of operational wildfire management programs, policy, standard operating procedures, and provincial objectives. You will participate on special provincial fire management teams and, through participation on various working groups, task forces, and committees, give technical and professional expertise to a wide range of wildfire management disciplines including, but not limited to, training, detection, program review, systems management, and strategic planning. Please note that you will also be required to travel within the region and throughout the province as part of your responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate competencies in the following areas:

Drive for Results – This position is directly accountable to the Wildfire Management group and focuses mainly on effective program development and delivery to meet provincial wildfire management objectives. Knowing what outcomes are important and maximizing resources to achieve results that are aligned with the goals of the organization is key in this role.

Build Collaborative Environments – You will be responsible for leading and contributing to the conditions and environments that allow people to work collaboratively and productively to achieve desired outcomes. This will include clearly conveying and receiving messages to meet the needs of both staff and stakeholders.

Develop Self and Others – This position supervises a number of staff both directly and indirectly. This will include coaching, mentoring, training, and supervising staff to ensure successful wildfire program delivery. As such, a strong desire to develop the long-term capability of yourself and others is required.

Develop Networks – You must work closely with other sections, Area Fire Centers, divisions, government agencies, industry, and the public to deliver provincial wildfire management programs, achieve common goals, and resolve issues. Maintaining healthy relationships is imperative to meet public, industry, and political expectations.

Creative Problem Solving – This position is complex in nature and decisions made can impact a multitude of stakeholders and have long lasting impacts on social and economic values. As such, you will need the ability to assess

Salary: $2,790.97 – $ 3,604.74 bi-weekly ($72,844 – $94,083 per annum).

Qualifications: A diploma or degree in Forestry, Natural Sciences or other related discipline plus a minimum of eight years related experience in Wildfire Management, fire behavior, detection, preparedness, suppression and pre-suppression planning is required. Type II Incident Command Team and Sector Leader certification is preferred. Eligibility for registration with the College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologists or College of Alberta Professional Foresters is required. Equivalencies will be considered.

As travel may be required in this position, you must be eligible for a Class 5 Driver’s License.

This position is located in Peace River.
