The Sawmill, Kilns, and Planermill employ approximately 230 people. Annual Lumber production is approximately 320 million board feet of SPF dimension lumber. The mill has a history of continuous improvement and has undergone a major expansion in the Planermill. The Position: This is a temporary/ full-time position within Grande Prairie Lumber’s Sawmill Modernization OPX Project Team. After starting in a role, based on applicant there will be onboarding plan developed to help become familiar with the project and manufacturing environment. Once initial onboarding is complete, your assignment will include the following:

  • Reports to Project Liaison and dotted line to Project Manager
  • Organize, implement and maintain scheduling management system supporting an identified project and plans.
  • Handles day-to-day updates on project schedule progress, work planning, and job safety planning
  • As directed by Project Manager:
    • Design and develop project schedule in MS Project.
    • Provides interfacing between Vendors, Contractors and Project Team (includes infield interactions, and/or meetings, conferences, etc…) to schedule work and coordinate assignments.
    • Assist to set up tasks and subtasks to ensure the satisfactory realization of project vendor and contractor requirements as scheduled.
    • Assist Project Manager, Construction Manager, Project Liaison, and Electrical Controls Manager in regards to helping define the scope of work to develop and update detailed schedules and identification of variances from the original plan.
    • Develop and update weekly the schedule working with contractor superintendents and construction team.
    • Develops monthly reports on Scheduling Progress and Tracking – to maintain periodic status reports to keep management informed on project progress.
    • Conduct analysis to determine alternative courses of action or recovery on slipped schedules.
    • Suggest management of risks affecting project profit, costs, schedules and client relations.
    • Log project timelines and maintain a database of tasks and their status.
    • Log all new information into the database and provide scheduled reports for contract coordination and reporting purposes.
    • Coordinate with Project Admin on Weekly construction meeting notes and updates, status, issue lists, and meeting notes.
    • Key Focus on Forward path 1 week ahead, and 3 to 4 weeks max in high-level outlook overview.
  • Acts as backup for Construction Manager for tasks when required including:
    • Plan/Field Reviews on Lifts and Excavations when required
  • Support project management team to maintain timely and effective change management processes, procedures and systems.
  • Participates in for Project Review Meeting agenda topics in regards to scheduling and planning activities
  • Assists in Tracking for Procurement and Delivery Items for Project with Procurement Leads
  • Assists in Organization of Delivery when required and storage in yard areas, or covered storage
  • Evaluate project schedule progress and performance and identify developing problem areas.
  • Alert Project Manager and Steering Team to Risks in Project or Execution Scheduling
  • Analyze critical path and constraints to determine the effect of changes to the schedule and recommend work-around. Consults others with expertise as required who have done similar work or has lead.
  • Assists with site resources to coordinate the commissioning and startup phase
  • Based on Skills and Experience this role may also include the following:
    • Assists with Leading of Precision Maintenance and Reliability items directly after Construction finished in machine center process area, or if possible after arrival to the site
    • Assist with Mechanical PM Development with Mechanical Representatives and Maintenance Department Manager

    • Industrial Site Safe Work Practices
    • Industrial Equipment Theory and Operations
    • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Microsoft Project
  • Preference will be given to those with:
    • At minimum 5 to 10 Years of Manufacturing and Construction Experience
      • Have a solid background and understanding Scheduling and Planning for Large Scale Industrial Projects.
      • Should have experience in multiple large-scale projects with high capital investments, and have been a key player on the project team possibly in a similar role.
    • Have experience and background with Industrial Construction for Sawmill
      • Possible other Manufacturing Experience in Similar Industries
    • Have some experience with running Mobile Equipment (for Material Load/Unload support if required)
    • Have Experience with Fire Protection and Alarm Systems and Hot Work Management
    • Technical Background or Skills relevant (to Maintenance/Reliability)
    • SAP Experience (i.e. From Work Management, Procurement, and Cost Tracking for Projects)
    • Knowledge of Applicable Codes and Standards relevant to Alberta (i.e. Safety Codes (Building/Fire/Electrical), APEGA, OHS, Relevant CSA Standards/Codes, etc…)

Working Conditions:

  • Will report to the Project Liaison and work directly with Project Managers and Project Team
  • Work Schedule to be coordinated with Project Liaison to meet project needs. This will generally be a day-shift position and will have direct overlap to coordinate with the construction schedule. Will need to be flexible from time-to-time to support project needs.
