In the Wildfire Management branch communication is critical- whether it is ensuring effective communications during emergencies, encouraging the prevention of wildfires or promoting the work the Forestry Division does. We are currently looking for a professional experienced in emergency communications, leading teams and developing communication plans. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Wildfire Prevention, this critical position leads the unit responsible for education and outreach, consumer based social marketing initiatives and crisis communications during wildfires and environmental emergencies. You will be responsible for setting the strategic direction and priorities, developing the communications plans for the branch and managing the budget and staff within the program. Additional responsibilities will include taking a lead role in delivering Division messaging as a media spokesperson, providing senior strategic professional communications counsel to the department’s senior and executive leadership and providing coordination, mentorship and coaching to the ten field-based Area Information Coordinators.

Qualifications

A degree in a related field such as Communications, Public Relations or Marketing plus a minimum of four years of related experience is required. Experience in natural resource based or emergency based communications will be considered an asset as will previous supervisory experience. Please note that candidates with lesser qualifications such as a degree or diploma in Forestry and 6 years of related experience will be considered at an underfill level.

For example, you will be overseeing and participating in the development of communication strategies to meet the information priorities of the Division. This position is relied upon to develop tools and resources that support Ministry representatives in delivering messages and programs, while promoting the movement toward clear, consistent, and integrated Ministry messages.

DRIVE FOR RESULTS: Knowing what outcomes are important and maximizing resources to achieve results that are aligned with the goals of the organization will be key while maintaining accountability to the branch and external stakeholders.

AGILITY: This position operates in an environment that is both highly political and fast-paced with potential high consequence outcomes when it comes to protecting Albertans and their communities from wildfire. As such, to be successful in this position you must have the ability to anticipate, assess, and readily adapt to changing priorities, maintain resilience in times of uncertainty and effectively work in a changing environment.

DEVELOP NETWORKS: This position is responsible for connecting with and influencing Corporate Communications, the Public Affairs Bureau, Environment and Parks, Education, National Parks, Indigenous communities’ municipalities, media and many others to deliver the program. As such, you will need to work on proactively building networks, connecting and building trust in relationships with different stakeholders.

BUILD COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENTS: You will be tasked with collaborating across ministries, with multiple levels of government, industry and public stakeholder groups to accomplish your goals. Additionally, you will lead and contribute to the conditions and environments that allow people to work collaboratively and productively to achieve outcomes within your unit and the greater communications group as a whole throughout the province.

DEVELOP SELF AND OTHERS: A commitment to lifelong learning and the desire to invest in the development of the long-term capability of yourself and others is required. You will supervise a team within your unit and provide ongoing mentorship and coaching to the ten area based Information Coordinators as well so well developed leaderships skills will be key.

Salary

$3,062.51 – $4,121.25 bi-weekly ($79,931-$107,565 annually)
