Role

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic, dependable and outdoor-oriented individuals to lead our Junior Forest Ranger (JFR) crews.

The JFR program is an exciting seven-week summer work experience youth program, with a forestry and natural resource management focus. The program fosters an appreciation, awareness, and respect for our natural resources through exposure to work projects, natural resource management and career awareness opportunities in this field.

There is one leader position available and one sub leader position available for each JFR crew.

Crew Leader ($23.54/hr)

The primary responsibilities of the leader will include:

  • Supervision and direction of a sub leader and a crew of eight crew members
  • Developing and implementing safety standards and procedures
  • Designing and supervising a safe, rewarding work and educational program schedule
  • Organizing training, evaluations, and addressing any situations with staff
  • Promoting team building and the outdoor experience.

Crew Sub Leader ($22.76/hr)

The primary responsibilities of the Sub Leader will include:

  • Coordinating camp activities
  • Projecting and conducting maintenance and inventory inspections of all equipment
  • Assist with the direction and supervision of all work projects, recreational outings and general camp situations
  • Implementing safety standards and procedures
  • Promoting team building and the outdoor experience.

Educational Background and Work Experience

Crew leader and sub leader responsibilities balance sensitivity towards the needs of young adults and provide challenging work experiences that cater to each individual crew member.

Crew leaders and sub leaders have experiences that range from third year post-secondary education to years of work experience. Your background may include:

  • Forestry (Lakeland College, NAIT, SAIT)
  • Environmental Sciences (GMU, MRU, UofA, UofC)
  • Outdoor Recreation and Education (Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership, MRU)

Crew sub leaders support crew leaders and are typically just starting their post-secondary education or have past JFR experience.

Leader and Sub Leader Qualifications

Leaders are expected to come to training with some credentials and youth work experience. Minimum requirements include:

  • Post-secondary education or relevant career experience
  • Full class 5 driver’s licence or Provincial equivalent. Please provide a copy upon application.
  • Defensive driving certificate is a requirement. Please provide a copy with your application.
  • Standard First Aid and Level C CPR. Please provide a copy upon application.
  • Experience with leading and participating in outdoor education.
  • All participants must pass a minimum physical fitness standard.

Each successful applicant must undergo a criminal and vulnerable sector record check in order to be considered for employment.

Training Sessions

We take approximately ten days to provide you with new skills, safety insight and trade secrets. We break this up over two sessions, one at the end of May and another before the crew members arrive in mid to late June. Some of the training sessions you can expect include:

  • Off-road driving
  • Radio operators course
  • Risk management
  • Trip planning
  • Wilderness first aid scenarios
  • Wildlife awareness
