Weyerhaeuser Drayton Valley is looking for a candidate with a strong Safety/Environmental background and will be reporting to the Unit Manager. This position will help to provide leadership excellence, understanding and driving safety goals. 

The Drayton Valley mill is a large-scale, highly competitive mill well situated to the market. It’s operated by a strong management team and approximately 150 workers represented by a union. It has a large customer base in North America and Asia.

Drayton Valley is a community of approximately 8,000 located 130 km southwest of Edmonton on highway 22. The community is situated between the North Saskatchewan River and the Pembina River and surrounded by landscapes that provide countless opportunities for recreation – biking, hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and more.

The Drayton Valley Lumber operations have an immediate opening for a Safety/ Environmental Manager. The combined responsibilities will be as follows:

Key Functions:

  • Provide full-time health and safety support to the site and ensure that all practices are in compliance with corporate and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Build a positive working relationship with all regulatory agencies.
  • Set safety objectives and targets to ensure that goals are achieved.
  • Provide leadership, coordination and technical expertise in the areas of environment, health, and safety and support the site in training and developmental requirements.
  • Conduct incident investigation on all work-related safety and environmental incidents.
  • Oversee WCB claims in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Responsible for coordinating internal and external audits that support the Corporate Safety Audit program and participate in external audits at Weyerhaeuser sites
  • Ensure accurate and timely implementation of facility safety and environmental plans, procedures, and reporting.
  • Support and/or lead safety and environmental compliance audits at the facility.
  • Maintain environmental compliance in accordance with the provincial code of practice for sawmill plants.
  • Continually improve environmental and incident prevention programs and techniques.
  • Provide regional support through participation on the Canadian Wood Products safety team
  • Role model all standards/processes and on-the-job behavior by living our core principles of integrity, fairness, & creating a positive inclusive work environment.

  Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/General Education Degree (GED) with minimum 6 years related experience OR Associate’s Degree with minimum 4 years related experience OR Bachelor’s Degree or higher with minimum 1-year related experience
  • Passion for safety as demonstrated by a strong commitment to associate safety
  • Understands safety compliance auditing process and ability to complete an internal audit/review
  • Technical expertise in safety to include regulatory requirements, OSHA recordkeeping, workers compensation, and industrial hygiene regulations
  • Experience in Safety Incident Investigations
  • Knowledge of WHMIS regulation and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) systems management
  • Ability to develop and effectively deliver safety training
  • Project management skills to include the ability to develop and implement safety processes
  • Strong, engaging, people-centered leadership style
  • Proactive, assertive and able to work with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency in MS Office and knowledge of health & safety programs
  • High level of integrity, strong work ethic, good judgment and problem-solving skills

The following qualifications are preferred: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental or Occupational Safety
  •  Knowledge of site operation processes
  • Safety & industrial hygiene certification and/or training conditions require.
