Weyerhaeuser Company in Grande Prairie is seeking a Dryside MSR/Grader Technician.  The Grande Prairie Lumber mill is highly valued by our customers for consistent quality and the mill has a reputation for outstanding customer service.  The facility operates with a modern work system and our success is attributable to the skill and commitment of our employees. 

In this role, the Dryside MSR/Grader Technician will perform the following functions:

  • Ensure lumber produced on shift is within grade parameters to maintain the grade reliability of the planer mill
  • Ensure that lumber produced is within the expected grade yields and take appropriate action or troubleshooting to correct.  As examples:
    • Investigate potential reasons for below grade yields such as a dirty scanner, top, and bottom color mismatch
    • Stop process and have scanner cleaned, follow up to make sure that yield improved
    • Grade yield can also be low due to the eased edge not being set correctly and Grade scan recognizing this as wane
    • Intervene with Team Leader and Planer Mechanic to correct a problem on planer set up
    • Monitor changes to ensure yield improves. NMI moisture meter communication error with Grade scan resulting in no MSR produced
    • Consult with Team Leader and Electrician to understand and correct problem, confirm that MSR produced is in grade
  • Prepare MSR and Grade Check reports for a shift, share results with support teams, leadership and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot and monitor the following equipment:
  • Grade Scan
    • NMI Moisture Meter
    • Grade Mark Reader
    • Winjet Grade Stamp
  • PET Trimmers
  • Trim saw fence
  • Weight & Thumper MSR
  • Proof Loader and Tension Tester (MSR)
  • Competent on one other major machine center
  • Work with AFPA and Quality Control Group as needed
  • Complete training to qualify as an MSR operator
  • Keep reliable and accurate records
  • Work with Process Control group as needed

Qualifications 

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:

  • Minimum education required is a High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Behavior consistent with the Safety Vision and Policy and the Site Principles
  • Ability to meet all Team Norms and Standards with a focus on active participation in safety programs
  • Willingness to develop new skills and change and adjust to an ever-changing work environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A positive approach to conducting assigned tasks and interactions with others
  • The ability to work closely with others in a team environment
  • Ability to work a rotating shift of two weeks of days, then two weeks of a night a shift consisting of 10-hour regular shifts. Some overtime will be expected
  • Strong self-motivation
  • Ability to prioritize and learn quickly
  • Consistent grading results and excellent knowledge of grading rules
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Actively grading in 2017 and in possession of a current 3-year grading ticket with 2 to 5 years of past grading experience preferred
  • Be willing to move to the Grande Prairie area if selected as the successful candidate.
  • Successful completion of an assessment process, background check and post-offer pre-employment drug screen and physical
