As an integral member of BBL’s Leadership Team, the General Manager will report directly to the BBL Owners, and is responsible for directing the day to day operations and maintenance of the sawmill, based in Nampa, AB. The incumbent will work proactively to anticipate business impacts and develop mitigation strategies. The ideal candidate is one who is passionate about continuous improvement, is committed to safe work practices, is an intelligent risk taker, one who takes decisive action and has superior team building and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributing to the short and long term growth strategy and ensuring operational and departmental goals and targets align with the growth strategy;
  • Managing the high-level, strategic, day to day operations of the company, including but not limited to:
    • determining staffing strategies;
    • evaluating the need for and formulating policies;
    • providing leadership across departments; and
    • managing expenses and investments relative to budget;
  • Being a Health and Safety leader, both functionally and strategically, by knowing best practices to prevent incidents, but also able to effectively navigate incident investigations and the claims processes, as necessary;
  • Completing annual budgeting for production and quality objectives;
  • Reviewing monthly financials for trends, concerns and opportunities;
  • Contributing to strategic decision making around capital planning and investments;
  • Understanding the Woodlands requirements that will impact BBL, in order to identify and mitigate details, through budgeting and forecasting;
  • Leading and coaching Mill Managers and Supervisors, regarding targets, goals and personal efficacy;
  • Knowing how to create and lead a team that great people want to join and remain a part of;
  • Facilitating weekly meetings to gather and implement ideas, ensure systems are functioning correctly and to monitor for efficiency and continuous improvements;
  • Managing external stakeholder relations, including but not limited to:
    • Financial Organizations;
    • Industry Partners;
    • Insurance;
    • Community Organizations; and
    • Educational Institutions.
  • Liaising directly with ownership regarding progress towards production targets, quality and resourcing.

Requirements:

  • Legally permitted to work in Canada;
  • Superior oral and written communications skills, in English;
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years experience in a similarly complex General Manager role;
  • Ten (10) years experience in the wood industry, preferably in saw mills (with leadership experience on the Planer and Mill processing) but total industry experience from logging to finishing will be considered;
  • Previous training or experience with LEAN Management or Six Sigma methodologies;
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and Passport;
  • Solid skills with the MS Office suite of programs;
  • Possess the ability to manage multiple priorities, while maintaining a strong attention to detail; and
  • Able to develop and lead high functioning teams.

Beneficial if you have:

  • Post secondary accreditation in Financial Management, Business Administration, or Wood Manufacturing;
  • Previous experience recruiting foreign employees; and
  • Possess current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR/AED certification.
